Beautiful Sabang, Palawan

Upon arriving on the small island of Palawan, we thought we would be staying in Puerto Princesa for a number of days…. we were wrong.
After doing lots of research on Puerto, we thought it would be the magical beach city we were looking for.
Come to find out, it pretty much only had one “beach.”
You had to pay to get your feet wet, the water was nothing of the light crystal blue that Google image search had revealed, but more green and brown covered in seaweed.
The sand was not white and soft, but more mushy and muddy. And all of this beach area was less than the length of a football field.
SO. We all made the immediate agreement that this was not the place we wanted to be, and we left for Sabang the next morning.
We took a three-hour giant jeepney bus ride over hills and mountains, through the hot and windy jungle. For those who do not know what a jeepney is, it is a jumbo jeep-like bus, no windows, always packed with people, intensely decorated, and very loud/clunky. With about 25 other locals and travelers, Drew rode shotgun and Brad and I right behind him. All of our bags and a few other riders rode on top of the bus. Through many different parts of the jungle, stopping at random times to drop people off, fix the bus, or for the driver to eat, we finally made it to Sabang.
We were immediately greeted by Louis. An authentic native, chill, yet eager for us to stay at the homestay he worked for. He led us along the beach, past many bungalows, massage parlors, bars and restaurants, before we finally reached THE GREEN VERDE.
Our room was only 20 meters from the beautiful white sand we had been looking for.
The water so clear and warm, we knew we had reached our home for the next 8 days.
And that’s just what we did. No need spend any more time or money riding in jeepneys or cabs, or seeing other places. We were exactly where we wanted to be.

Our first night, I set up my silks in a tree hanging over the sandy beach. As I was climbing, flipping, tossing and turning, it drew few people over to watch. One special person in particular, one of our friends for the next week, RJ.
RJ, Drew and Brad immediately started talking, getting to know one another, and we all decided we wanted to spend some time together! He invited us to go get some fresh fish off the fishermans boats and grill ’em up for dinner! (YUM)
That night we met a few other wonderful people.. Cherry Belle, Joey and George. We spent the night jammin at one of the beach bars, drinking Tanduay Rhum and Red Horse beer (both very yummy and only in Philippines!)
The next couple of days consisted of us being lazy beach bums, meeting other interesting travelers, and getting to know our new friends of Sabang.
RJ, an extremely talented hand weaver of accessories, made us very unique and special pieces of jewelry. Myself, two anklets, Brad & Drew each a bracelet.
Cherry Belle, a beautiful, sweet and shy young lady, ran the natural food and drink stand on the pier. There we found the yummiest banana chips any of us have EVER had, DELICIOUS mango wine, and a variety of snacks and health supplements.

Joey helped run the beach bar shack we spent almost every night at. A very shy guy until the drinks start getting poured.
George.. Well, everyone calls him George of the Jungle, and we will soon tell you why…..

To somewhat sum up the things we did while in Sabang:
-Cave exploring
-Live band reggae show
-Waterfalls
-Canoeing through Mangrove tree river
-Ate fresh tamilok (long oyster-like worms)
-Jungle trekking
-Body surfing
-Ate amazing food 3-4 times a day
-Chilled super duper hard

To say Sabang is a beautiful place is an understatement. The people are wonderful, the food is wonderful, the experiences one will have there are wonderful, and we are thoroughly looking forward to going back to what feels like home to us.
To our friends there, I hope you are reading this: Thank you a million times for the memories you helped us create. You will forever be in our minds and hearts, until we see you again, WE LOVE YOU.
