Our Local Temple

A short walk from Brad’s apartment is the Huiji Temple, dedicated to the Sage King Chen Yuanguang. Made mostly of cement, the temple has been rebuilt five times, most recently in 1968. There are still a few stone sculptures from older generations of its history. Its upper floor is dedicated to Wen Chang, the god of scholarship (Brad mentioned seeing many college students here with their exams in hand, praying for good grades).

We’ve visited the temple a few times, and on one occasion there was a ceremony going on with an older monk leading a group in song after song of worship. They weren’t the most tonally accurate or rhythmically tight group of musicians, but I felt honored to have the chance to hear such a unique and distinct musical celebration. I’m kicking myself for not having my portable recorder on hand to capture the moment. (Taking an iPhone video felt inappropriate but I could have discretely taken an audio recording with no trouble).

  1. I hope you can help me. I realize it might be difficult to find a temple specializing in the following areas of the human condition but since you’re over there if you come across a temple dedicated to improving discipline at the rice bowl, pepping up lazy oxen, or creating vast undeserved wealth, drop in a coin while uttering my name and I’ll pay you back the next time I see you. IF IT WORKS. (Small caveat there I include for legal reasons.) Oh, and see if you can get my eyes aligned symmetrically in my head! I’ve always wanted that.

    • Dave, in your state there is this legal thing that might provide exceptional eyeball alignment, although it could exacerbate the rice bowl situation, let alone the sluggish oxen. Try it, and you can pay me if it works. Then one of us will attain undeserved wealth.

    • Please forgive me if I offend anyone, but I think you just missed the annual convention for adherers of the beliefs you just mentioned. Its called CPAC and they meet annually, Last week was their most recent. In-order to go you will already have to have had you eyes re-aligned as it is a requirement for admission.

  2. Sara, I live at the Acadia in Dallas. Got to know your Mom when she was here; I adore her, and miss her terribly. She gave me your web site, which I have so enjoyed– the pictures are lovely, and the sights of Bangkok are beautiful. Green, lush– really a gorgeous area. Keep enjoying yourselves, how lucky you are to be seeing these wonders. I envy you, but am thrilled for both of you.
